pinoy's popular beach food recipes

Posted by Nancy Janiola on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in food and recipes, summer,

Nothing can be as fun and exciting when you're out in the beach with families and friends not only during summer but on weekends as well. For us Filipinos, the food choices that quickly comes to our mind when we plan on going to the beach usually are grilled stuffs (pork, fish, squid) and the most popular among them all - the 'fish kinilaw' (cubed fresh tuna fish in vinegar, salt, cucumber, lemon lime, spices and hot chillis). Ohh, imagine how hot and mouthwatering it is. But I left it out in the pictures below so you have something to think up for yourself, LOL!

If you have enough time, you may want to marinate your pork chops/belly with soy sauce, lemon and garlic for few hours to make it tastier... the same thing with the fish. But in our case, we made it sure to get the newly catch fish and freshly slaughtered pork meat in town so all we had to add on both before putting them to grill is plain salt.

Anyway, these pictures were taken last year when we had our visit in one of Cebu's finest beaches. Oh how, I so miss that adventure and this summer just reminds me of it.

Yes, I will!

Here's the meal we've shared during mine and my niece, Inah's joined birthday celebration we held last Wednesday, 17th. Happy birthday to us!!!

Surprisingly we forgot that it was Ash Wednesday and we had one pork dish on our table. But we didn't let it bother us much seeing everyone was more drawn to filling their tummy up all they can, LOL!

We had three chicken dishes (roast, strips and stew), grilled pork and milkfish and an assortment of desserts (cake, mango float, fruit salad and of course the kids and kids at heart all time favorite, ice cream). Indeed it was a night of tolerance to those who are on a diet program... but definitely not me.

And here are some of our pictures. From the left is me while doing the crispy chicken strips with my niece, Jam. Then there's Inah, at the center and lastly my sister, Joyce and I in a tricycle on our way to do the shopping early that day. Click image to enlarge.

Trivia: To non-believers, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent season that occurs exactly 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter. In the Roman Catholic Church it is observed by fasting, abstinence from meat (particularly pork meat) and repentance - a day of contemplating one's transgressions. Read more about it here.

Kraft Eden: 27 days to go to breaking the world record

Kraft Eden: 27 days to go to breaking the world record

Posted by Nancy Janiola on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in food and recipes,

Thirty Seven (37) days until Christmas! How's the enthusiasm there? Mornings are getting colder here in my part of the world. Lights and lanterns are up and so is the tree. How 'bout yours?

I know many of you are just as excited as we are but hey while preparing those decors, I'd like to invite you as well to check out yet another biggest event shall I say in the world of food preparation to take place ten days earlier than the most awaited time of the year - the Eden's December 14 event (breaking the world record), mainly participated obviously by the Philippine's biggest and popular nutrients packed cheese maker, Kraft.

As much as we Filipinos love to prepare healthy meals for our family, I am also proud to say that Filipinos are undeniably competent when it comes to discovering new recipes and food preparations. So in this event, I am inviting you to take part by bringing out the best of your best cheese recipes and become a part of the history.

I have mine ready for submission in a short while. I call it cheesy vegetable pizza - a Japanese inspired recipe but here I added lots of grated Kraft Eden cheese in it making its taste more suitable to Pinoy's palate.

Let's help make Philippines' Christmas the merriest this year. It's 27 days to go but the earlier you participates the better. We've done it in sports, now we can do it again in the world of wellness!

garlic for a toast

garlic for a toast

Posted by Nancy Janiola on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in food and recipes,

Good morning! It's another heavy day... well one of the heavy days of the month and I'm not supposed to be up and typing here yet but the butter and garlic toasts that my sister Joyce is making up in the other room using her precious conveyor toaster oven simply smells heavenly and so tempting... can't help to grab a bite!

I love toasts. We all do. For the kids, they love it buttery and sweet but for big sister and mine, we prefer garlic while the rest loves it both. I can go for it at any time of the day. It's best when paired with just coffee to make a good breakfast or instant macaroni and cheese for either lunch or dinner. Oh so good!

Another one great experience I have had in Cebu aside from exploring new places was meeting different people from different races. I made quite several acquaintances and got the chance to chit chat with them. It’s not as easy to carry a smooth conversation with them though because some of them don’t speak the universal language. But somehow, I appreciate the way they have tried to be understood. That experience made me learn a lot of new things such as their culture, attitude and manners. But to me the most interesting part was the chance to get introduced to their local foods and other kitchen recipes. Some of the Japanese and Italian recipes are the best I have ever tasted so far. I even got the chance to make one easy to prepare Japanese dish one time and everybody just loved it.

Well anyway speaking of recipes, I have good news to all moms, kitchen enthusiast and to all others who are just learning and starting to love cooking. I know we Filipino families no matter how big or small always find ways to celebrate each important occasion be it a personal, social or national occasions. We have the attitude of sporting our best delicacies to our friends and visitors in a grand and festive banquet. This time you may want some new addition to your menu list.
